As Vietnam and Mexico mark 50 years of diplomatic relations in 2025, Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi has paid tribute to a unique piece of shared history between the two nations – its role as home to Mexico’s first embassy in Vietnam.
From 1976 to the early 1980s, Room 215 at the iconic hotel – then known as the Reunification Hotel – served as the headquarters of the Mexican diplomatic mission in Hanoi. On 30 May, a commemorative plaque was unveiled at the hotel, honouring this historic connection and reaffirming the values of mutual respect, friendship, and cultural exchange.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, George Koumendakos, General Manager of Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, said: “It is especially fitting that this unveiling takes place in 2025 – a year that marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between our two countries. This gesture not only celebrates the past, but also reaffirms our shared values of respect, collaboration and cultural understanding.”
Ambassador of Mexico to Vietnam Alejandro Negrin reflected on the significance of the site: “The unveiling of this plaque commemorates a significant chapter in the relationship between Mexico and Vietnam. It reflects the early presence of Mexican diplomacy in Hanoi and the values of friendship, solidarity and mutual respect that have guided our relationship ever since. Celebrating this legacy at the Metropole is a reminder of our shared history and an expression of our ongoing commitment to strengthening the ties between our nations.”
To accompany the anniversary celebrations, the hotel has relaunched its popular “Mexican Culinary Fiesta” – a vibrant month-long showcase of Mexico’s UNESCO-recognised cuisine, running from 16 May to 15 June at angelina, the hotel’s contemporary cocktail bar, whisky lounge and restaurant.
Guests are invited to enjoy a curated menu featuring traditional Mexican dishes, brought to life with modern flair and the finest local and imported ingredients. Highlights include tacos al pastor, tamales, and ceviche, alongside authentic salsas and seasonal ingredients inspired by the country’s diverse culinary landscape.
Complementing the food, the hotel’s expert mixologists have created a bespoke cocktail selection for the fiesta, celebrating Mexico’s most iconic spirit – tequila – in a series of bold and beautifully balanced drinks.
As one of Hanoi’s most storied addresses, the 124-year-old Metropole Hanoi has long played host to historical events, dignitaries and moments that have shaped Vietnam’s international relations. With this new plaque and a revived celebration of culture and cuisine, the hotel continues its tradition of honouring heritage while looking ahead to deepening global connections.
