Nestled in the idyllic setting of Bad Gastein, The Cōmodo is a new design hotel that seamlessly blends mid-century nostalgia with contemporary alpine flair.
The Cōmodo, revitalized from the structure of a past health clinic from the 1960s, celebrates the modernist design of that era. This venture is the brainchild of designer Piotr Wisniewski and architect Barbara Elwardt, who are the pioneers of the Berlin-based creative studio, weStudio. The building was acquired by Barbara Elwardt in 2019.
Her fondness for the village was rooted in the many years she spent there with her family at a nearby hotel, often pondering the dormant building’s potential. When it went on sale, she seized the opportunity. Recognizing the hotel’s history as a health resort, Elwardt chose to embrace its heritage rather than discard it. She envisioned its spacious lobby merging with the restaurant, the generously sized rooms, and the expansive outdoor area as the foundation for its revival.
Nestled in the tranquil village of Bad Gastein, the town boasts a train station linking it to significant transport hubs, a majestic waterfall at its heart, and a location at the valley’s end, free from through traffic. The valley’s terminus is so scenic that it seems to transport one away from the bustle of city life.
A place seeped in soothing qualities and with a long history of wellness – the cōmodo strikes the perfect balance between creativity and nature. Here, art takes the stage with a curated mix of old and new; the story unfolding through a series of collaborations with renowned and rising European artisans
Interior Design
The hotel’s design effortlessly marries its historical charm with contemporary elegance. Custom-made furniture, lively colour highlights, and a carefully curated mid-century style all add to the inviting atmosphere.
Each of our 70 rooms features a comfortable bed, an en-suite bathroom with a rain shower, oak parquet flooring with underfloor heating, and authentic vintage furniture. Some rooms boast expansive views through floor-to-ceiling windows across the Gastein Valley, while others offer a vista of the wooded pine forests.
The suites feature a spacious private balcony, a comfortable double bed, a cosy living area with vintage furniture, a freestanding bathtub, expansive panoramic windows, a writing desk, and a record player. All are complemented with St. Charles luxury toiletries, fluffy bathrobes, and slippers.
The wallpaper features topographical illustrations, utilizing the intricate patterns created by the fine contour lines of elevation maps to depict the mountain tectonics near Bad Gastein. Similarly, the carpets are abstract designs, drawing inspiration from the nearby mountain gorges and natural scenery.
The hotel rooms feature 40 unique prints. The wall design in the swimming pool area was inspired by the rock formation behind the hotel and has been incorporated into the expansive 17-metre-long wall.
Bold shapes and pops of colour create a warm and inviting atmosphere – an ode to the modernist style of the 1960s and 70s. Shades of rich wine and bottle-green offset the original terrazzo floor, while local materials like oak and pine wood offer a timeless aesthetic.

Art and Collaboration: The Cōmodo collaborates with European artisans, infusing art into every corner of the hotel.
The Comodo spa being recognised for its healing powers since the 19th-century, the village has long beckoned emperors and empresses thanks to its mineral-rich baths, restorative hikes and abundant nature. The spa draws on these soothing qualities to create its own wellness traditions. Here, treatments are tailored to the individual and performed using luxury Saint Charles products and the healing properties of the Gastein thermal water. It is said that the mineral-rich water has a regenerating, anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effect on joints, muscles and cell renewal.
