Digital border checks set to reshape travel from October 2025

Eurostar has unveiled a first look at the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) set to launch at London’s St Pancras International station on 12 October 2025. The preview, led by Simon Lejeune, Eurostar’s Chief Safety and Stations Officer, marks a significant shift in how non-EU travellers – including UK citizens – will be processed when entering the Schengen Area.

What’s Changing

The EES replaces manual passport stamping with biometric registration, including fingerprint and facial scans, for travellers entering the EU. The system is designed to streamline border control, improve security, and reduce congestion over time – though initial rollouts may require adjustment.

At St Pancras, Eurostar is preparing dedicated zones for biometric checks, aiming to minimise disruption and maintain the station’s flow. The preview highlighted how the new system will integrate with existing travel infrastructure, with signage and staff support planned to guide passengers through the process.

Business Travel Implications

For frequent travellers, especially those commuting between London, Paris, and Brussels, the EES introduces a new layer of pre-departure planning. Eurostar has confirmed that returning passengers will not need to repeat biometric registration for each trip, as data will be stored for future entries.

However, travellers are advised to allow extra time at the station during the initial rollout phase. Eurostar is working closely with border authorities to ensure a smooth transition and will provide updates via its website and customer communications.

Looking Ahead

The EES is part of a broader EU initiative to digitise border management across member states. While the system is expected to enhance long-term efficiency, its introduction at a major hub like St Pancras will be closely watched by business travellers and industry stakeholders alike.
